With the temperatures beginning to drop and a few snowflakes drifting through the air, we’re gearing up for a fabulous and busy winter. It is with great pleasure that we’re able to announce the majority of our Winter 2016-2017 season.
You’ll see the full schedule below, but highlights include our annual 2016 Holiday Concert Series featuring Shawn Colvin, the Doo Wop Project and Trout Steak Revival and our New Year’s Eve Gala with Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears! The Holiday Concert Series is one of our largest fundraisers of the year and critical to the success of the Sheridan Opera House. We’re also announcing all three of our ski films, the next Young People’s Theater play “Elf the Musical Jr.,” our holiday collaboration with Telluride Theatre and one of the best winter concert lineups we could have asked for.
Friday November 18, 2016 Acclaimed writer/director Ben Sturgulewski joins the award-winning team at Matchstick and their two decades of filmmaking expertise to deliver “RUIN AND ROSE,” an epic creative vision brought to life by the talents of the world’s top skiers. Black Tie Ski Rentals will be giving away awesome swag at both shows! Shows are 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. with doors opening one hour before show time. Saturday November 26, 2016 Warren Miller’s latest film “Here There & Every Where” plays on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016. Take a freeski voyage with industry veterans Ingrid Backstrom and Wendy Fisher in Crested Butte, tour Eastern Greenland by dog sled with Seth Wescott and Rob Kingwill and follow Jess McMillan and Grete Eliassen on a Swiss holiday aboard the Glacier Express. Explore the backcountry of Western Montana’s Glacier Country with Tyler Ceccanti, Collin Collins and Keith Curtis and catch a powder day with Kaylin Richardson, Matt Elliott, Marcus Caston and the Kicking Horse ski patrol in British Columbia. This screening is sponsored by Bootdoctors, who will be giving away tons of free swag at both screenings. Shows are 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. with doors opening an hour before. Friday December 2, 2016 to Sunday December 4, 2016 Telluride residents will embrace their inner “elf” when SAF Young People’s Theater presents their middle school production of “Elf The Musical Jr.” Dec. 2-4, 2016. Based on the hit-2003 movie, “Elf the Musical Jr.” tells the story of a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is given the name Buddy and raised by elves in the North Pole. Buddy lives happily unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list, and his stepbrother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of the holidays. Tickets: $13 adults, $11 children 18 and under.
Wednesday December 7, 2016 The Sheridan Arts Foundation is celebrating Teton Gravity Research’s 21st birthday with a screening of their latest ski film “Tight Loose” on Wednesday, Dec. 7 during Noel Night. With over 21 years of traveling the globe and pushing the boundaries of what is possible, they have experienced the full spectrum of adventure. It has been a constant evolution of refining a lifestyle – keeping things as buttoned up on the front end in order to seize the moment when things reach the edge of control. This screening is sponsored by Bootdoctors, who will be giving away tons of free swag at both screenings. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for kids 18 and under. Sunday December 11, 2016 The Sheridan Arts Foundation and Ride Festival presents the Wood Brothers and Ben Sollee live in concert at the Sheridan Opera House on Sunday, Dec. 11. A stalwart on the Americana scene, the Wood Brothers spend most of their nights singing to strangers, something they’ve become addicted to – not for attention it draws but rather for the connection they feel with their audiences. Two brothers decide to form a band, adapting the blues, folk and other roots music sounds they loved as kids into their own evocative sound and twining their voices in the sort of high lonesome harmony blend for which sibling singers are often renowned. Friday December 16, 2016 The Sheridan Arts Foundation presents “ Jay and Silent Bob Get Old” on Friday, Dec. 16, 7 p.m. The hilarious duo Jay & Silent Bob are back! Film icons Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes made history and fans all over the world with the characters Jay and Silent Bob from the movies “Clerks,” “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Clerks 2.” Now you can see them live recording their comedy podcast Jay & Silent Bob Get Old. This is what fans everywhere have been waiting for, an opportunity to see their comedic heroes on stage, doing what they love, telling stories. Friday December 16, 2016 A writer, comedian, podcaster and film director, Kevin Smith has written and directed numerous films, including “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Red State & Tusk; Creator of AMC’s Comic Book Men;” authored “Silent Bob Speaks,” “Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith, My Boring-Ass Life” and most recently “Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good.” He can be heard daily at Smodcast.com, a vast network of podcasts. Saturday December 17, 2016 to Friday December 23, 2016 The Sheridan Arts Foundation & Telluride Theatre are teaming together to present “Peter & the Starcatcher,” a prequal to Peter Pan. A Tony-winning play by Rick Elice with music by Wayne Barker, this play upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be the legendary Peter Pan. A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novel, from marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, “Peter and the Starcatcher” playfully explores the depths of greed and despair and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love. The play runs Dec. 17-23 at 7 p.m. nightly. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for kids 18 and under. Local’s Night is Dec. 18th and tickets are $15 and $10.
Tuesday December 27, 2016 Multi-Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin returns to the historic Sheridan Opera House as part of the 2016 Holiday Concert Series. Winning her first Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut “Steady On,” in 1989, Colvin has been a mainstay of contemporary folk music ever since, releasing 11 superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. Colvin was recently recognized for her career accomplishments receiving the honor of Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award from the 2016 Americana Awards Show. Wednesday December 28, 2016 The Sheridan Arts Foundation presents the Doo Wop Project live at the Sheridan Opera House on Dec. 28 during the 2016 Holiday Concert Series. The Doo Wop Project is street corner singing for a whole new generation. DWP takes you on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, and the Four Seasons…all the way to Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz and Amy Winehouse. Featuring current and former stars of Broadway’s smash hits “Motown: The Musical” and Jersey Boys, including Telluride’s very own Nathan Scherich, and their hot band, The Doo Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate — and in some cases entirely re-imagine — some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history. Thursday December 29, 2016 Trout Steak Revival plays the Sheridan Opera House Dec. 29 as part of the 2016 Holiday Concert Series. Trout Steak Revival has earned a place in the mountain states bluegrass scene, performing to sold-out audiences, winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band contest, placing in the 2012 Rockygrass Band Competition and even winning an Emmy Award for a soundtrack with Rocky Mountain PBS. Trout Steak Revival pushes the envelope on a progressing genre while drawing creatively from the many canons of American roots music. Their new album, “Brighter Every Day,” was released in March 2015. Produced by Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters, the album has received radio play and acclaim both in Colorado and across the world. Saturday December 31, 2016 Ring in 2017 at the Sheridan Opera House with a New Year’s Gala featuring Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears! Joe Lewis hails from Austin, TX, the collision center where Southern soul meets midwestern blues and vagabond punk. Once compared to “The Godfather of Soul,” James Brown, Black Joe Lewis bends toward vintage blues, soul and R&B and has garnered fans all over the country with his smooth crooning and killer guitar skills. Doors open at 9 p.m. and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears plays at 10:30 p.m. Our New Year’s Eve is always a blast featuring party favors and champagne. Saturday January 21, 2017 The Sheridan Arts Foundation presents Dustbowl Revival live in concert on Saturday, Jan. 21. Over the last few years Dustbowl has become known for their free-flowing and joyous live shows, combining their funk rhythm and brass section with a fast-picking stringband section – opening for bands as diverse as Lake Street Dive, Trombone Shorty and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. While bluegrass, gospel, New Orleans swing and blues were what brought the gang together, after touring over 200 dates a year for the last 5 years, the band realized as it began to collaborate more on the road, that it was never content to be a throwback band recreating lost eras. When they recorded “Busted” it was like a door opening. As they charge into 2017, Dustbowl is ready to bring their new sound – more emotional, experimental and bolder than ever – to a bigger audience. Thursday February 16, 2017 to Sunday February 19, 2017 The Telluride Comedy Fest returns for its 18th annual festival at the Sheridan Opera House over Presidents Day Weekend. Tickets will go on sale in early November. Stay tuned for more information.
Wednesday February 22, 2017 to Thursday February 23, 2017 The Infamous Stringdusters return to the historic Sheridan Opera House for a two-night run Feb. 22-23, 2017. At the helm of today’s bluegrass advancement, the Stringdusters’ resume includes five studio albums, three IMBA awards and a Grammy nomination. But their true brilliance lies in their passion for live performance. Comprised of Andy Hall (dobro), Andy Falco (guitar), Chris Pandolfi (banjo), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle) and Travis Book (upright bass), this acoustic quintet combines a collective skill set seldom rivaled. Intricate harmonies, cleverly composed arrangements and their profound commitment to presentation induces traditionalists and newcomers to dance on common ground. Wednesday March 8, 2017 The Sheridan Arts Foundation presents acclaimed singer songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter live in concert at the historic Sheridan Opera House on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. It’s been five long years since Donavon last graced the Opera House stage. This professional surfer turned rocker enters his second decade of performing and recording music for the masses with his latest album “The Heart.” Once considered a protege of Jack Johnson, he has made a name for himself as impressive songwriter and laid back folk pop artist. Tickets are $35 general admission standing room and $45 reserved seats in the balcony plus a $4 ticketing fee (the fee always applies, whether you purchase tickets in person, over the phone or online).
Friday March 10, 2017 Turkuaz is a 9-piece “Powerfunk” outfit from Brooklyn, NY, whose modern take on the classic funk sound has established them as leaders in the funk revolution that’s currently taking place in the genre. Blending elements of Pop, R&B, and Soul with their distinct aggressive funk core, Turkuaz sounds like the musical love child of Sly & the Family Stone and Talking Heads. The group’s constant coast-to-coast touring since 2012 has earned them a passionate and dedicated national fan base that’s consistently growing. A dance band at their roots, Turkuaz’s live shows are high-energy, floor-shaking, visually appealing events filled with colorful clothing and choreographed dance moves that always leave attendees wanting more. Saturday March 11, 2017 The Sheridan Arts Foundation welcomes the quintessential Irish-American band, Solas, on March 11, 2017. Bursting onto the Irish music scene in 1996, Solas is an incandescent ensemble that has found contemporary relevance in timeless traditions. Anchored by founding members Seamus Egan (flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistles, guitars, bodhran) and Winifred Horan (violins, vocals), who form the backbone of the uniquely definable Solas sound, long time members Eamon McElholm (guitars, keyboards, vocals), and Mick McAuley (button accordion, vocals) and newest member, the dynamic Moira Smiley (vocals, banjo), Solas is musically at the top of their game and continues to be the standard bearer not only for great Irish music, but great music in any genre. Wednesday March 15, 2017 to Friday March 17, 2017 The Sheridan Opera House celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with three nights of Leftover Salmon. Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, string-based music, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. Formed in Boulder at the end of 1989, the Colorado slam grass pioneers took their form of aggressive bluegrass to rock and roll bars at a time when it wasn’t so common, helping Salmon become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jamgrass genre. Today, Leftover Salmon is: Vince Herman (vocals, acoustic guitar, washboard); Drew Emmitt (vocals, acoustic and electric mandolin, electric guitar, fiddle); Andy Thorn (vocals, acoustic and electric banjo); Greg Garrison (vocals, acoustic and electric bass); Alwyn Robinson (drums); Erik Deutsch (keyboard).
